Sackboy A Big Adventure was one of the launch titles for the PS5. Coming from the N64 era, I was excited to play this game knowing that it was a 3D platformer, but at the same time, I was very concerned since it was being developed by Sumo Digital, the people who worked on Little Big Planet 3. Now, while both me and my brother used to own a copy of Little Big Planet 3, the game was unplayable for us since it was very buggy, and we just eventually gave up on it. So, an experience like that did concern me for Sackboy. Thankfully though, Sackboy ended up being a really good game. Without further ado, lets jump right into the review.
Story
As far as story goes, I don’t really have much to say since I don’t want to spoil it, but I will say that the villain of this game has personality. I really like Vex, and I think you guys will like him too.
Evaluating the Gameplay
The game plays very similar to Super Mario 3D World. It’s a breeze to beat if you want to complete the game, but trying to one hundred percent this game is quite the challenge. To one hundred percent it, you have to get all the collectables and get the highest score for each level. That includes the co-op levels as well, which I will get to in just a sec. On top of those things, you also have to beat each level without dying. All of these factors adds replay value to the game. There are also time trial levels that are optional, but are very fun to complete as well. Beating the time trials are also required if you want to one hundred percent the game.
As far as the co-op levels go, at launch, this was impossible for me to do since I didn’t have anyone to play it with locally, and online co-op wasn’t available at the time. However, as of December 17 last year, an update added online co-op to the game. Thanks to the update, I was able to play it with my buddy RazorBladeMango. During our playthrough, while our connection was good, there were times when it lagged. Depending on the connection between you and your friends, the strength of the connection may vary. This game can be played for up to four players through both local and online.
There is also copyrighted music in some levels, and the developers handled them really good.
As far as the boss battles go, the battles against Vex get very repetitive. The other boss battles were much more creative.
Closing Thoughts
I really enjoyed Sackboy. I would really love to see a sequel for this game. We need more 3D platformers these days. If you have a PS5, I really urge you to get Sackboy A Big Adventure. If you don’t have a PS5, then you can get the game for PS4.
